3 June 2009: In a speech given at a lunch in honor of the centenary of the birth of former UN Secretary-General U Thant, in New York, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted that U Thant was at the origin of the concept of ‘One World’ and underlined that the food, energy, financial and climate crises emphasize “the interconnections of our ‘One World’.”
Ban added that developing countries will bear most of the impacts of climate change and stressed the need for global solidarity.
He indicated that he would continue calling for this solidarity until the Copenhagen climate change conference in December, and said U Thant’s vision of ‘One World should inform all our thinking. [UN Press Release]
