Ban Ki-moon16 November 2009: Speaking at the opening of the World Summit on Food Security, which is taking place from 16-18 November 2009, at UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that “food security and climate change are deeply interconnected.” He called for increases in funding to develop sustainable food systems that can withstand shocks, such as an economic crisis or climate change.
Ban underlined the importance of the Summit, as well as that of the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, noting that “there can be no food security without climate security.” He added that the Copenhagen Conference must conclude a comprehensive agreement that will provide a firm foundation for a legally binding treaty on climate change.
