Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan national, has gained worldwide recognition over four decades as an academic, environmentalist, women’s rights advocate and parliamentarian. She introduced the notion of community-based tree planting in 1976 and has been the patron of the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign since 2006.
