24 October 2010: The 13th Summit of the International Organization of la Francophonie took place from 22-24 October 2010, in Switzerland, and focused on development.

In a message to the Summit delivered by Alain Le Roy, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the focus of the Summit on development, called for transforming the promises made at the September 2010 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Summit into “real progress with smart investments in decent work, women’s and children’s health, smallholder agriculture, infrastructure and green energy.” He also stressed the need for the support of the Francophonie on climate change. In this respect, he said the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun, must “capture progress” on those issues where consensus exists, and agree on “how to move forward on issues that are still unresolved.” He also underlined the importance of finance for building trust and spurring action.
