Over 50% of the UN's emissions are from air travel, totalling 4.2 tons per capita, making it the largest ongoing challenge for the UN.
23 April 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in its capacity as secretariat of the UN Environment Management Group (EMG) has released the UN’s third annual “Moving Towards a Climate Neutral UN” report, which details the UN’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for 2010, as well as ongoing efforts to reduce them.
According to the report, the UN’s total GHG emissions for 2010 amounted to 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Over 50% of the UN’s emissions are from air travel, totalling 4.2 tons per capita, making it the largest ongoing challenge for the UN.
The report also highlights recent UN efforts to reduce emissions, including: the opening of the new energy neutral office facility in Nairobi, Kenya; the approval by the Environment Management Group (EMG) of a Strategic Plan for Sustainability Management in the UN System; the launch of a new page on sustainability on the UN’s primary website; the doubling of green champions in the UN system working to make their offices more sustainable; and the participation of the UN offices in New York, Geneva and Nairobi in Earth Hour.
