27 October 2012: The 9th Policy Board of the UN Collaborative Programme on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (UN-REDD) considered reports on progress on the implementation of national programmes, as well as global programme activities.

The Policy Board Country presentations from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, and Viet Nam supported discussions on lessons learnt and best practices, including on improving the timeliness of the inception workshop and Programme Management Unit (PMU) establishment phase of national REDD+ programme activities.

Thematic discussions were convened on national forest monitoring systems for reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+), multiple benefits and a Green Economy, and gender and REDD+.

Concerning gender and REDD+, the Policy Board concluded that gender analysis is a necessity in the design of REDD+ interventions and encouraged the coordination of gender work with the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF).
