UN-REDD ProgrammeDecember 2013: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) released the November 2013 issue of its newsletter, which highlights support for the development of country approaches to REDD+ safeguards through the establishment of the UN-REDD Safeguards Coordination Group.

On-going workshop series on Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) were also noted, with recent events in Panama and Peru. Stakeholder engagement was also the focus of the launch of a geospatial public information system in Ecuador and the convening of an indigenous peoples consultation meeting in Bangladesh. The newsletter also reports on a REDD+ study tour in Sri Lanka with participants from Cambodia.

Technical work highlighted in the newsletter includes satellite monitoring as part of the national forest inventory in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a workshop on spatial analysis to support planning for REDD+ activities in Thailand, and the development of country-specific tree allometric equations to estimate carbon stocks in Viet Nam.

Furthermore, the newsletter announces the results of the Third African Regional Climate Change and Development Forum during which discussions reflected both high expectations for REDD+ in the region as well as concerns about the ability to deliver on-the-ground benefits.

The newsletter also highlights UN-REDD activities at the nineteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP19) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Oslo REDD Exchange, and a TEDx event hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi, Kenya.
