17 October 2013: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) released a policy brief on REDD+ and the 2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
The brief explores areas of potential synergy between the REDD+ and forest biodiversity conservation and sustainable use communities, recognizing that each community can support the objectives depending on the circumstances. In particular, the brief notes that REDD+ activities that respect the Cancun safeguards will be better placed to support the Aichi Targets because of attention to conservation and the engagement of indigenous peoples and local communities.
The brief stresses that not all Aichi Targets will be supported through REDD+, and that some REDD+ activities may act in conflict with some Targets if leakage results in the displacement of degradation to other ecosystems or forest areas. However, the brief highlights Aichi Targets 5, 7, 11, 14 and 15 as having particular links to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) decisions on REDD+ safeguards.
Finally, the brief recommends that countries consider how REDD+ and the Aichi Targets could be mutually reinforcing, and suggests that joint planning could support their achievement in a cost effective manner.
