UN-REDD has announced the contribution by Norway of US$30 million to support the second phase of the UN-REDD National Programme in Viet Nam.
The target under the second phase is to increase forest area to 45% and reduce emissions from the agriculture and rural development sector by 20% by 2020.
5 December 2012: The UN Collaborative Programme on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (UN-REDD) has announced the contribution by Norway of US$30 million to support the second phase of the UN-REDD National Programme in Viet Nam.
The second phase covers the period 2012 to 2015 and will build on previous successes in REDD+ readiness with regards to benefit sharing for REDD+ and stakeholder engagement, including ensuring the free, prior and informed (PIC) consent of indigenous peoples and other forest-dependent communities in REDD+ efforts.
Since it began activities under the UN-REDD Programme in 2009, Viet Nam has achieved an increase in forest cover from 27% of the national area in 1990 to almost 40% today.
