The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) in collaboration with Code REDD and Wildlife Works convened a high-level side event on the margins of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly to address the contributions that the private sector can make to the success of REDD+ investments.
The event marked UN-REDD's fifth anniversary.
18 September 2013: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD), in collaboration with Code REDD and Wildlife Works, convened a high-level side event on the margins of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly to address the contributions that the private sector can make to the success of REDD+ investments. The event marked UN-REDD’s fifth anniversary.
The event, held as a REDD+ Talks, included the following speakers: Edward Norton, UN Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity; Heikki Holmas, Minister for International Development, Norway; Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP); and representatives from Indigenous Peoples groups, the private sector and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Speakers at the event highlighted the need for an investment of about US$ 40 billion per year to halt deforestation and the importance of building a bridge between REDD+ and Indigenous Peoples. The event also noted successes from REDD+ including reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, protecting threatened forests, and improving livelihood and education opportunities in partner communities.
