unredd-forestcarbon28 October 2014: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) and the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) have announced the outcomes of the self-selection process for Civil Society Observers.

The announcement presents the outcomes of the self-selection process for observers based on open nominations and votes. The Civil Society Observers selection process has been conducted separately from the process for the selection of indigenous peoples representatives, which is ongoing.

The UN-REDD programme is welcoming Observers from Africa, Robert Chimambo, representing the Zambia Climate Change Network; from Latin America and the Caribbean, Gustavo Sánchez Valle, representing Red Mexicana de Organizaciones Campesinas Forestales (MOCAF) in Mexico; and from Industrialized Countries, Chris Meyer, representing the Environmental Defense Fund, US.

The FCPF is welcoming Observers from Africa, Augustine Njamnshi, representing the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA); and from Latin America and the Caribbean, Gustavo Sánchez Valle, representing Red MOCAF in Mexico.

The Asia-Pacific region will be repeating its voting process and is delayed in its selection process.

In addition to attending Policy Board Meetings, Civil Society Observers are responsible for sharing information with their networks and constituencies, soliciting input from civil society organizations (CSOs) with regard to issues to be raised with the UN-REDD governing body, and advising Policy Board members on strategies and suggested actions. Civil Society representatives are also tasked with ensuring the effective participation of women’s organizations and coordinating with indigenous peoples representatives. [UN-REDD Press Release]
