lpaa17 September 2015: The UN and the Governments of France and Peru have launched a website in order to show how momentum for climate action is building ahead of the 21st session of the Conference of Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), where governments are expected to agree on a global climate agreement.

The website showcases actions being taken under the Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPAA), which brings both State and non-state actors together in order to accelerate cooperative climate action. According to the UNFCCC, such action is critical in order to keep global average temperature rise below 2°C.

More specifically, the LPAA is aimed at strengthening climate action now and beyond COP 21 through, inter alia: enhancing efforts towards low-carbon, climate-resilient societies; mobilizing partners and providing a platform to ensure actions and commitments are prominent and visible; and providing enhanced support to existing initiatives, including those launched during the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit in 2014, by helping them become more ambitious, strengthen inclusiveness and participation, and set up reporting, governance and implementation frameworks. The LPAA is also supporting new initiatives, particularly in less developed sectors or dimensions.

The UNFCCC indicates that initiatives will be regularly added to the website in action areas such as: agriculture, forests, transport, renewable energy, energy access and efficiency, resilience, cities, private finance, business, innovation, building and short-lived climate pollutants.

The website complements the Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action (NAZCA), which was launched in Lima, Peru, by the COP 20 Presidency and the UN, and has, thus far, registered over 3700 commitments by companies, cities, subnational regions and investors. The LPAA is a joint undertaking of the Peruvian and French COP Presidencies, the Executive Office of the Secretary-General of the UN and the UNFCCC Secretariat.

COP 21 is scheduled to take place from 30 November – 11 December 2015 in Paris, France. [LPAA Website] [UN Blog Post on Website] [NAZCA Website]
