UN-NGLS Roundup Highlights Outcomes of ECOSOC 2012 Substantive Session

In the September 2012 issue of "NGLS e-Roundup," the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) reports on the 2012 ECOSOC Substantive Session.

The newsletter summarizes the discussions and outcomes of the Session, and features an interview in which Navid Hanif, DESA, gives his views on ECOSOC's future role in sustainable development and its engagement with civil society.

5 September 2012: The September issue of the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service’s (UN-NGLS) “NGLS e-Roundup” offers an overview of the 2012 Substantive Session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The Session took place from 2-27 July 2012, in New York, US.

The newsletter highlights the adoption, during the Session’s High-Level Segment, of a Ministerial Declaration calling for strengthened partnerships among governments, the private sector and civil society to promote productive capacity, employment and decent work. The High-level Segment also included the Development Cooperation Forum, which addressed “the future of development post-Rio,” and a high-level panel discussion on “Accountability, Transparency and Sustainable Development.”

Also summarized are the resolutions and declarations adopted during the Session, including on gender, education, humanitarian relief, the least developed countries (LDCs), human settlements and cities, and Haiti’s long-term development strategy.

The newsletter also features an interview with Navid Hanif, Director of the Office for ECOSOC Support of the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), in which he gives his views on ECOSOC’s future role in sustainable development and its engagement with civil society.
