UN Marks Official Start of Operations at Rio+20

Sha Zukang, Secretary-General of the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), participated in the flag-raising ceremony in Brazil to mark the start of the UN's operations at Rio+20.

He recalled the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, or Rio Earth Summit) in 1992, also held in Rio, as “one of the most celebrated landmark UN Summits,” and said it launched the world on the path to sustainable development.

5 June 2012: Sha Zukang, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and Secretary-General of the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), spoke at an event on 5 June 2012, in Brasilia, Brazil – the host country of the Conference – to raise the UN’s flag and mark the start of its operations at Rio+20.

Sha recalled the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, or Rio Earth Summit) in 1992, also held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as “one of the most celebrated landmark UN Summits,” noting it launched the world on the path to sustainable development.

For the preparations of the Conference venue and hospitality in Brazil, Sha expressed appreciation to the National Organizing Committee, the Mayor and Governor of Rio de Janeiro, President Dilma Rouseff, and the Congress. [Statement of Sha Zukang]
