UN-HABITAT 18 August 2008: UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT)
Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding and
Participation Contract with the Government of the People’s Republic of China on
the UN’s participation in the Shanghai World Expo 2010, which will be held from
1 May to 31 October 2010 around the theme ‘Better City, Better Life.’

At the
signing ceremony, Tibaijuka said the challenge for the international community
was to make urbanization and globalization work for all people, instead of leaving
billions behind or on the margins. She noted that the Shanghai Expo 2010 will
provide an opportunity for participants across China and the world to meet,
share and learn from each other about how urban life can be improved in
developed and developing cities. She explained that the UN Pavilion, themed as
‘One Earth and One UN,’ would showcase the challenges and opportunities of
globalization and urbanization, as well as best practices of the participating
UN agencies in achieving the UN’s objective of peace and development through
working with all stakeholders on urban development. [UN-HABITAT
