story highlights

The model and tools provided in the framework reflect what is currently available to address BES challenges, and will be updated as needed.

August 2012: In a new report, the UN Global Compact and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) propose a framework for companies to explore the issue of biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) as it relates to their activities and corporate sustainability. The report seeks to contribute to the integration of BES in the private sector by engaging the top management of companies in the development, implementation and disclosure of BES policies and practices.

UN Global Compact, the report notes, has defined good environmental stewardship as the comprehensive understanding and effective management of critical environmental risks and opportunities. It is therefore important that corporate strategies are based on an environmental stewardship approach.

The framework aims to be a flexible, “living” document that will be updated to remain relevant and effective. The model and tools reflect what is currently available to address BES challenges, and will be updated as needed.
