UN General Assembly President Announces Climate Change Event

UN General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim has written to permanent representatives and observers to the UN with information on a thematic debate entitled “Addressing Climate Change: the United Nations and the World at Work.” In a letter dated 15 January 2008, President Kerim indicated that the General Assembly event would take place on 11 and 12 February 2008, at UN Headquarters in New York.

The event is planned as part of the UN’s follow to the September 2007 high-level meeting on climate change and the 2007 UN Climate Change Conference in Bali.
According to the latest draft programme published on 23 January, the event will include a number of high-profile speakers from the UN system, governments and the private sector. Speakers will include UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Virgin Group Chairman Sir Richard Branson, as well as the heads of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, UN Environment Programme, UN Development Programme, World Food Programme, Global Environment Facility, and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The event will consist of a brief opening ceremony followed by interactive panel discussions focused on partnerships, cooperation and UN activities on climate change.
