27 July 2012: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) agreed to endorse “The Future We Want,” the outcome document of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), on 27 July 2012. The outcome document was adopted at the close of Rio+20, which took place from 20-22 June 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
During discussion within the UNGA, Papua New Guinea, on behalf of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS), and Nauru, on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), expressed concerns about the document, noting that its commitments fall short of those outlined in the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI), and therefore their countries’ needs may not be met.
Speaking after the endorsement, UNGA President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser stressed the importance of implementation, and the need for development cooperation.
Consultations will take place with States and stakeholders to determine how the text’s decisions will be implemented, according to Ion Botnaru, Director of UNGA Affairs. The UN Secretary-General then will submit a detailed report on programme budget implications to the UNGA at its 67th session.
