February 2009: The Inuit Circumpolar Council, in partnership with the UN Forum on Indigenous Issues, the Chirapaq Centro de Culturas Indigenas del Peru, the International Indian Treaty Council, the Mainyoito Pastoralist Integrated Development Organization, the Organization of American States, and the Conservation Society of Pohnpei, will host the Indigenous Peoples’ Global Summit on Climate Change from 20-24 April 2009, in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Summit is expected to attract about 300 participants and will provide a forum for: sharing lessons learned and experiences to adapt and mitigate climate change impacts; enhancing the role of indigenous peoples’ in national and international processes on climate change; promoting public awareness on potential solutions to climate change based on traditional knowledge; and advocating rights-based strategies and solutions that are culturally sensitive.
