UNOSSC Director Yiping Zhou said UNOSSC aims to set a new vision for WACAP in the context of the post-2015 development agenda, to ensure “mayors from all regions can engage in meaningful contributions to make our cities…cleaner and safer, more resilient and sustainable, more affordable, accessible and livable for all.”

Zhou also called for the relocated WACAP to promote a more democratic, inclusive governance structure and broad-based membership, with city ownership and leadership.

UNDP will continue to support the Alliance and to share best practices from its work in local governance and sustainable urban development.

Nader Ghazal, mayor of the City of Tripoli and WACAP member, welcoming the move, said, “We need to break the stereotype of the South being a region in need, but rather a region that is contributing to its own development, and to the development of its sister cities of the North.”

WACAP is a platform and network of over 900 cities for the exchange of best practices and knowledge on poverty reduction, urban development and access to services. [WACAP Press Release] [UNDP Press Release]
