UN-Habitat with UNECA and ECLAC are supporting the governments of Botswana, Colombia, Ecuador and Tunisia to report on urban SDG indicators.
The project is piloting an approach that uses a national sample of cities to report on performance across all urban-related SDG indicators.
In Tunisia, UN-Habitat's Global Urban Observatory and the Africa Center for Statistics at UNECA held two training workshops in Monastir and Tozeur.
June 2018: The governments of Botswana, Colombia, Ecuador and Tunisia are reporting on urban SDG indicators, with support from the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). A UN-Habitat companion guide titled, ‘SDGs: Monitoring Human Settlements Indicators,’ provides an overview of targets and proposed indicators for the monitoring of SDG 11 indicators, as well as human settlements indicators in other SDGs.
The project is implemented through the ‘SDG 11: Monitoring and Reporting on Human Settlement Indicators in Africa and Latin America’ programme. It is piloting an approach that uses a national sample of cities to report on performance across all urban-related SDG indicators.
In Tunisia, UN-Habitat’s Global Urban Observatory and the Africa Center for Statistics at UNECA held two training workshops in Monastir and Tozeur. The workshops for local authorities and national statistical agencies focused on statistical tools and techniques to build country-level capacity, including specific tools developed by UN-Habitat to support SDG 11 monitoring and reporting, including those that focus on spatial and non-spatial methods of data collection and measurement for all indicators. The tools, including the City Prosperity Index (CPI) and the National Sample of Cities, seek to enable all countries to harmonize reporting on SDG 11.
The workshops also developed a workplan to guide data collection and analysis in the two pilot cities, leading to the establishment of an urban indicators database and a CPI profile report for each city. Monastir has established an urban observatory to collect and collate data focused on environmental indicators.
