unodc-unesco-wto5 March 2014: Three UN agencies have joined hands in the fight against illegal trade by launching a new campaign to raise awareness among travelers and the tourism industry on making ethical choices and reducing demand for illegal products. The campaign was presented at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin, Germany.

The campaign, called ‘Your Actions Count – Be a Responsible Traveller,’ and organized under the auspices of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), offers guidance on how travelers can recognize the most common illicit goods and services, including illegal wildlife trade products. The campaign is meant to help combat organized crime as well as uphold the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.

The new campaign is supported by Marriott International and Sabre Holdings, which have agreed to promote the campaign’s anti-trafficking message with their customers and employees. [UN News Centre] [UNWTO News] [CITES News] [UNESCO Media Release]
