UN Agencies, Academics Discuss Population Dynamics in Post-2015 Development Agenda
story highlights

Academics and UN representatives from UNFPA, DESA, UN-Habitat, IOM, FAO and UN Women called for integration of population dynamics in the post-2015 development agenda, and for contribution from a number of UN review processes, such as the 20-year review of Programme of Action from the International Conference on Population for Development (ICPD).

20 November 2012: The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) organized an expert group meeting on population dynamics and the post-2015 agenda, bringing together academics and representatives of several UN agencies, in New York, US.

Meeting participants from UNFPA, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the UN Agency for Human Settlements (UN-HABITAT), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO) and UN Women agreed on the need for integration of population dynamics in the post-2015 development agenda. Participants also called for contribution of insights from a number of UN review processes, including UNFPA’s current 20-year review of Programme of Action from the International Conference on Population for Development (ICPD).

UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin told participants that population dynamics were raised at the World Economic Forum (WEF) for the first time the previous year, highlighting the influence of population on development.

The meeting considered the impact of demographic trends such as population growth, aging, and migration on labor markets, income distribution, poverty, social protection and pensions, as well as impacts on environmental sustainability, climate change, and water, food and energy security.

Recommendations from the expert group consultation will feed into the post-2015 processes. [UNFPA Press Release]
