Training Course Issues Guidance on Sustainable Sediment Management in the Sava River Basin

A training in sustainable sediment management (SSM) sponsored by the International Sava River Basin Commission (ISRBC), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) International Sediment Initiative (ISI) and the European Sediment Network (SedNet) produced guidance for the development of a SSM Plan for the Sava River Basin.

26 October 2012: The International Sava River Basin Commission (ISRBC), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) International Sediment Initiative (ISI) and the European Sediment Network (SedNet) hosted a training on sustainable sediment management (SSM) in the Sava River Basin. The training resulted in practical guidance for the development of a SSM Plan for the Sava River Basin.

The “Practical Training Course on SSM with the Sava River Basin as a Showcase” took place in Zagreb, Croatia, from 15-18 October 2012. The training included session on: sediment quality – ecotoxicology; engineered river systems; ecosystem functioning and biodiversity – ecotoxicology; sediment quality – geochemistry and environmental chemistry; sediment budget at a basin scale; sediment status and key issues in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia; and guidance for the Sava SSM plan.
