Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) 19 December 2008: The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Steering Committee has published a report on GCOS planning and implementation activities during 2007-2008. The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) is a joint undertaking of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Environment Programme, and the International Council for Science.

The GCOS aims at providing comprehensive information on the total
climate system, involving a multi-disciplinary range of physical,
chemical and biological properties, and atmospheric, oceanic,
hydrologic, cryospheric and terrestrial processes.
The GCOS report
notes good progress with the implementation and further development of
the System during 2007-08, in particular with regard to the main
components on which it is built: the Global Ocean Observing System; the
Global Terrestrial Observing System; and the WMO Integrated Global
Observing Systems. The report also highlights the preparation of a
comprehensive report on the GCOS to the Subsidiary Body for Scientific
and Technological Advice of the UNFCCC for its consideration at its
30th session in June 2009.
In addition, the report provides advice
for the GCOS Sponsors for updated governance arrangements for the
System and underlines the need for strengthened support for the GCOS
Steering Committee, Panels and Secretariat. [GCOS Report]
