Co-sponsored by the World Meterological Organization (WMO), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Council for Science (ICSU), GCOS was established, in connection with the adoption of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to facilitate the systematical collection and dissemination of climate-related observations.
