Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress Receives First Ratification

The Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Biosafety Protocol was ratified by Latvia on 30 November 2011.

The Protocol provides for international rules and procedures for liability and redress in the event of damage resulting from living modified organisms (LMOs).

7 December 2011: Latvia has become the first country to ratify the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

Latvia ratified the Protocol on 30 November 2011.

Adopted at the fifth Meeting of the Parties (MOP 5) to the Biosafety Protocol, in Nagoya, Japan, in 2010, the Supplementary Protocol provides for international rules and procedures for liability and redress in the event of damage resulting from living modified organisms (LMOs). It will enter into force once 40 countries have ratified. So far, 36 countries have expressed their intention to ratify by signing the Supplementary Protocol.
