30 July 2008: The Global Standards Organization (GSC) has
called on its members to share their views and experiences with groups addressing
information and communications technologies (ICTs) and climate change, highlighting
the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Focus Group on ICTs and
Climate Change.

The GSC, an initiative of the ITU, the European
Telecommunications Standards Institute, the United States Committee T1 and the
Japanese Telecommunication
Technology Committee, held its thirteenth meeting from 14-17 July 2008
in Boston, USA. In its Resolution GSC-13/08 on ICT and the Environment, the GSC
acknowledged the positive and negative impacts of ICTs on climate change and
the environment, and encouraged its members to support the work of the ITU
Focus Group.
“The resolution promotes a spirit of collaboration and mutual
support to tackle climate change with the utmost efficiency,” said Malcolm
Johnson, Director of the ITU’s Standardization Bureau. “ITU gives all the
world’s standardization bodies the opportunity to work together to apply the
power of ICTs to this greatest of all challenges,” he added.
The ITU Focus Group
was established in July 2008 to work on the development of methodologies for
the analysis, evaluation, and quantification of greenhouse gas emissions from
the ICT sector and the reductions that may be achieved through the use of ICTs
in other sectors. [ITU
