IOC, CCCCC, and SPREP signed two memoranda of understanding (MOUs) at an event held on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
The MOUs aim to enhance South-South cooperation and knowledge sharing across the three regions.
21 June 2012: The Commonwealth Secretariat has announced that three regional organizations, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), have agreed to cooperate on steps to deal with the effects of climate change.
The agreement comes in the form of two memoranda of understanding (MOUs), which were signed on 20 June 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at an event held on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The event focused on on strengthening collaboration among the three regions in promoting sustainable development.
The MOUs aim to enhance South-South cooperation and knowledge sharing across the three regions. The organizations discussed possible areas of focus for regional collaboration, reflecting the priorities of small island developing States (SIDS) in sustainable development and climate change, including: oceans management; financing mechanisms; skills development and training; and youth engagement.
