SPREP hosted an Inception Workshop for a US$5 million dollar Climate Change Adaptation Programme, which is funded by the Adaptation Fund and implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
The Programme will address: the risk of salt water intrusion and longer periods of less rainfall, particularly the northern atolls that rely on rain water; the climate-resilience of tourism operations; and coastal protection through island specific solutions.
6 July 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) hosted an Inception Workshop for a US$5 million dollar Climate Change Adaptation Programme, which will be implemented from 2012-2017, with the guidance of the Pa Enua or outer island communities in the Cook Islands, targeting sectors such as the water, health, agriculture and marine resources.
The Inception Workshop, which took place from 2-6 July 2012, in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, brought together key stakeholders from government, the region and outer island communities, and was a result of a series of national level consultations carried out on the Cook Islands.
The Programme is funded by the Adaptation Fund, and implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP). It will address: the risk of salt water intrusion and longer periods of less rainfall, particularly the northern atolls that rely on rain water; the climate-resilience of tourism operations; and coastal protection through island specific solutions. It will also help build the capacity of the island agencies and community groups so they are better equipped to implement solutions.
