18 March 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) convened the Pacific Climate Change Roundtable (PCCR) from 14-18 March in Alofi, Niue. Delegates discussed the establishment of a Pacific climate change fund that would be coordinated at the regional level but operated at the national level.
Delegates also discussed regional issues including: the Transitional Committee for the Cancun Green Fund; climate change policy and information management; adaptation in the Pacific; and the Pacific negotiation strategy ahead of the upcoming Durban Climate Change Conference.
Aliioaiga Feturi Elisaia (Samoa), Pacific representative for the Green Fund Transitional Committee, told delegates that credible data are required “to validate and support” the Pacific argument for tailored modalities in the form of a special window for small island developing States (SIDS).
The PCCR is a regional climate change forum held once every two years. It brings together representatives from the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), regional and international development agencies and partners, civil society and non-governmental organizations, academic and research institutions, and various groups and individuals that are supporting PICTs in responding to climate change issues in the region. The primary aim of the PCCR is to facilitate regional coordination, collaboration and coherence in the implementation of PICTs climate change priorities consistent with the Pacific Islands Framework for Action on Climate Change (PIFACC).
