SPREP, China Discuss Opportunities for Future Cooperation

On his official visit to China, David Sheppard, Director-General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), underscored that the Pacific region could learn from China's experience in climate change adaptation and renewable energy.

5 March 2012: During an official visit in Beijing, China, David Sheppard, Director-General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), met with China Development Gateway, the official online source of information and development tools for the Chinese Government. Sheppard provided an overview of the work of SPREP and discussed opportunities for future joint cooperation with China.


Sheppard highlighted four key priorities outlined in the SPREP Strategic Plan, namely: climate change; biodiversity and ecosystem management; waste management and pollution control; and environmental monitoring and governance. He underscored the value of SPREP’s work with Pacific Governments on practical ways to adapt to climate change, focusing on efforts that aim to strengthen the resilience of coastal zones.

Sheppard further stressed that climate change is increasing freshwater scarcity in low-lying islands and drought incidents, with resulting negative impacts on the livelihoods Pacific islanders.
