SPREP Assists Tuvalu and Tokelau with Water Shortages

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) announced it is providing assistance to Tokelau and Tuvalu to address severe water shortages in both countries, through its Small Grants Scheme.

South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)10 October 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) announced it is providing assistance to Tokelau and Tuvalu to address severe water shortages in both countries, through its Small Grants Scheme.

According to SPREP, support for Tokelau is being provided in cooperation with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Australian Government (through AusAID), and aims to assist Tokelau in long-term planning for integrated water resource management, including improved drought planning, increased water storage capacities and improved water conservation. SPREP also has supported the development of Tokelau’s National Climate Change Policy.

Provision of support to Tuvalu, in the development of a National Climate Change Policy and the National Strategic Action Plan on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, is being provided through the Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change Project (PACC), as well as through a partnership with the Pacific Applied GeoScience and Technology Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), and UNDP.
