SPC Runs Energy Audit and Efficiency Training in Palau
story highlights

This two-day energy audit training session to strengthen knowledge and skills in energy auditing and energy efficiency, including increasing the capacity of local contractors to support energy efficiency initiatives in buildings as well as increasing the uptake of the loan subsidy programmes.

8 March 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), together with the Palau Energy Division and the National Development Bank of Palau (NDBP), convened a two-day energy audit training session to strengthen knowledge and skills in energy auditing and energy efficiency, including increasing the capacity of local contractors to support energy efficiency initiatives in buildings.

The training session, which took place from 5-6 March in Koror, Palau, was attended by 30 participants, including staff of the Palau Public Utilities Corporation, NDBP, and technicians and builders from local construction companies. According to SPC, NDBP manages three home loan subsidy programmes to promote energy efficiency and renewables. These include: an energy efficiency loan subsidy programme for new homes; a programme promoting the installation and use of renewable energy technologies in existing homes and businesses; and an energy efficiency programme focusing on retrofitting existing homes. It is expected the training will increase the uptake of the loan subsidy programmes.

These loan initiatives have been developed with the support of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the UN Development Programme, the Sustainable Economic Development through the Renewable Energy Applications project, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the North Pacific ACP Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project, funded by the European Union.
