9 March 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has announced that the Pacific Organic and Ethical Trade Community (POETCom) has developed an organic guarantee and labelling system, the Pacific Organic Standard, in New Caledonia.

According to SPC, the Pacific Organic Standard, which provides farmers with Organic Pasifika certification, works via a Participatory Guarantee System, under which farmers and consumers work together to ensure produce is grown in accordance with the Standard. SPC further reported that certified organic products meet EU equivalent standards, and once a third party certification procedure is in place, produce will be eligible for export to the EU.

SPC acts as the Secretariat for POETCom and is the custodian of the Organic Pasifika label. Organic certified fruits and vegetables are now available at markets and supermarkets across the territory. [SPC Press Release]
