SPC Holds Agroforestry Training in Tonga
story highlights

The training addressed nursery design and management, plant propagation techniques (seed collection and seedling propagation, cutting, grafting, marcotting and budding), and intercropping of economical trees, with agricultural crops to maximize the productivity of the land.

SPC27 August 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) held a two-day agro-forestry training for 30 Tonga and ni-Vanuatu agroforestry students in Eua, Tonga, from 23-24 August 2012. The training promoted agroforestry as part of the traditional farming system, where land resources are limited, in order to enhance their productivity and address issues of food security and poverty alleviation among communities.

The training addressed nursery design and management, plant propagation techniques (seed collection and seedling propagation, cutting, grafting, marcotting and budding), and intercropping of economical trees, with agricultural crops to maximize the productivity of the land.

SPC held the training at Hango Agricultural College, to which it has provided financial and technical support to establish demonstration agroforestry plots on a 20-acre site and teach students about the importance of sustainable farming systems. [SPC Press Release]
