UNEP1 November 2013: The 2013 Global South-South Development Expo, organized by the UN Office of South-South Cooperation and hosted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), convened under the theme ‘Building inclusive green economies,’ from 28 October-1 November 2013, in Nairobi, Kenya. Investors, green businesses, governments and others pledged over US$450 million during the event that focused on exchanging “Southern-grown” ideas.

According to UNEP, the GSSD Expo included events such as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Roundtable, which led to the signing of a US$21 million hydropower plant construction project in Tanzania, and a Leadership Roundtable, which involved senior UN officials, Member States, businesses, and corporate sector representatives, sharing experiences on South-South cooperation and the role such cooperation may play in the post-2015 era.

The Expo also included a Solution Exchange Forum that showcased innovative projects in developing countries that contribute to environmental protection, economic development and decent job creation.

A key outcome of the Expo was an announcement by the United Arab Emirates that it will host the first global Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) conference in March 2014, in Dubai. The PAGE partnership assists participating countries in shifting investment and policies toward clean technology, resource-efficient infrastructure and sustainable natural resource management.
