story highlights

The timeline includes Pacific, Latin American and Caribbean and African regional preparatory meetings, a proposed SIDS inter-regional PrepCom in November 2011, and the launch and roll-out of SIDSNet.

February 2011: The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Unit has issued a timeline of SIDS-related events taking place prior to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio 2012).

The timeline is divided into “official CSD/UNCSD activities” and “other activities.” The official activities include: both the formal and informal intersessional meetings of the UNCSD Preparatory Committee; Pacific, Latin American and Caribbean, and African regional preparatory meetings; and a proposed SIDS inter-regional PrepCom in November 2011.

Other activities include: Conferences of the Parties (COPs) for related multilateral environment agreements (MEAs); the UN Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC IV); meetings of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP); the launch of “new and revamped SIDS CSD Registered Partnerships;” and an event on island green economies by the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA).

The Road Map also lists activities by the SIDS Unit such as a project on Vulnerability-resilience Country Profiles and the launch and roll-out of SIDSNet. [SIDS Road Map to UNCSD]
