24 July 2013: A new report of the UN Secretary-General examines progress towards poverty eradication worldwide. Drawing links between poverty, hunger, unemployment, inequality and climate change, the report recommends policies that put sustainable development at the core of the post-2015 development agenda to reach the goal of complete eradication of poverty.

The report, titled ‘Implementation of the Second United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2008-2017),’ is submitted in response to a UN General Assembly (UNGA) mandate in resolution 67/224.

It highlights the importance of sustained economic growth and the creation of good jobs at the country level, and encourages support for rural development and sustainable agriculture. Stating that addressing the impact of climate change is “integral to the eradication of poverty,” the report calls for the dissemination of clean energy technologies to all countries.

In its recommendations, the report stresses the need for poverty eradication to integrate the three dimensions of sustainable development, while increasing inclusiveness for the entire population. It calls upon the UN system to further coordinate efforts and collaborate policies on poverty issues, while encouraging Member States to support sustainable patterns of consumption and production.
