SEAD Honors Two Companies in Energy-Efficient Product Competition
story highlights

In its Global Efficiency Medal competition, the Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) initiative selected Samsung and LG as winners for their energy efficient flat-panel televisions sold in Europe.

Future rounds of awards will honor products available in North America, India and Australia, and in the categories of computer displays and electric motors.

31 August 2012: The Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) initiative has announced that Samsung and LG are the first winners of the SEAD Global Efficiency Medal competition, which honors commercially available, energy efficient products. SEAD notes that electricity savings could amount to 18 billion kilowatt (KW) hours per year in Europe, and more than 70 billion KW hours per year globally, if all televisions sold were as efficient as those of the two awarded companies.

The winners for the European region were announced at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) consumer electronics trade fair in Berlin, Germany, on 31 August 2012. The awards were given for the product category of flat-panel televisions, in which Samsung won the price in both the small-size category (less than 29 inches) and the medium-size category (29 to 42 inches), while LG won in the large-size category (42 to 50 inches).

The regional awards for North America, India and Australia will be announced later this year. At the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) in 2013, the best performers in each size category of all regions will be honored as “International Winner.” Other product categories in the competition are computer displays and electric motors.

SEAD is an initiative under the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC) to support energy efficiency policies and programmes. [SEAD Press Release]
