February 2013: The January 2013 newsletter of the UN Secretary-General’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) Initiative highlights outcomes of the January meeting of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and updates on SE4ALL initiatives and collaborations.

The newsletter notes discussions at the third session of IRENA’s Assembly on reaching SE4ALL’s objective of doubling the global share of renewables by 2030. To ensure goals are met, IRENA launched the REMAP 2030 initiative, which aims to identify new opportunities to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy. The newsletter also notes the launch of the Global Atlas for Solar and Wind and discussions on IRENA’s Renewable Readiness Assessment process.

The newsletter further discusses: Al Gore, Gisele Bündchen, and Kandeh Yumkella’s support for SE4ALL on CNNInternational and YouTube; an article in the academic journal “Nature Climate Change,” which finds that the SE4ALL Initiative’s goals are compatible with limiting global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celcius when combined with global cuts in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; Infosys’s collaboration with SE4ALL in the high-impact opportunity (HIO) on Renewable Energy Procurement; and updates on the Global Consultation on Energy and the Global Tracking Framework.
