miningmap13 January 2016: The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) released for public consultation an “atlas” mapping the linkages between mining and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The draft report, titled ‘Mapping Mining to the Sustainable Development Goals: A Preliminary Atlas,’ was created in collaboration with the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The consultation is open to all stakeholders from 13 January to 8 April 2016.

The document illustrates how mining companies’ products and activities, including exploration, mining itself, end products and mine closure, can help achieve the SDGs. It aims to help governments, civil society and other stakeholders identify opportunities for shared action and partnership with the mining sector.

The draft Atlas reflects interviews with experts from industry, civil society, governments, academia, international organizations and financial institutions. It contains a chapter for each of the 17 SDGs, highlighting how the mining industry can contribute to the Goal and identifying opportunities for collaboration between mining companies and other stakeholders. Each chapter also includes case studies and suggestions for integrating the SDGs into policies, standards and management systems, social and environmental baselines and impact assessments, and risk and opportunity assessments and planning processes.
