unsdsn22 May 2014: The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has released a revised working draft of its report, ‘Indicators for Sustainable Development Goals,’ incorporating responses and comments received during a public consultation process in February and March 2014. The report proposes 100 ‘core indicators’ for the areas of focus emerging through the UN General Assembly’s (UNGA) Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In response to the first draft of the report, some commenters said more indicators are required, while others expressed concern that 100 is too many. Some questioned whether a proposal for an annual reporting cycle is realistic. Other commenters wished to clarify that not every metric will be applicable to every country.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the SDSN in August 2012, as a means of mobilizing scientific and technical expertise in the interests of tackling sustainable development challenges in cooperation with UN agencies, multilateral financing institutions, and private sector and civil society organizations. The SDSN aims to link up technical work with international policy making processes. [Report Webpage] [Summary of Changes to Report] [SDSN Website] [IISD RS Story on Draft for Comment]
