September 2011: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the release of the September 2011 issue of its newsletter, The Sandwatcher, featuring articles from Sandwatch teams in 20 countries, from the Caribbean, Indian and Pacific Ocean regions, Africa, Australia and Europe.

Sandwatch is a grassroots network of schools and community groups working together to monitor and conserve local beach and nearshore environments and build resilience to climate change. The project is coordinated by the Sandwatch Foundation, a non-profit, non-governmental organization, and supported by UNESCO.

The newsletter includes a report on the Sandwatch-UNESCO National Sandwatch Workshop that was held in Gambia, in April 2011, and highlights the start of new Sandwatch teams in Qatar, Senegal, Cape Verde and Belize. It also provides an update on: the new Sandwatch online database project; a biological hazard in Lake Victoria, Kenya; Sandwatch’s expansion in the Pacific region, Kiribati, New Zealand, Australia, Cook Islands and Fiji; Sandwatch activities in the Caribbean, namely in Cuba, Guyana, Bahamas, Barbados and Puerto Rico; and Sandwatch’s continued activities in Maldives and Seychelles.

The newsletter further highlights the launch of Sandwatch’s new, updated website. [Publication: The Sandwatcher, September 2011]
