Rio+20 Side Events Highlight Sustainable Transport, Agriculture

Side events held on Saturday, 16 June, highlighted, among other issues, forestry, pastoralists' and farmers' role in drylands, green economy and education for sustainable development.

The day coincided with the opening of the Sustainable Development Dialogues.

16 June 2012: A number of side events took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in conjunction with the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), including on agriculture, forests and sustainable transport. The day coincided with the opening of the Sustainable Development Dialogues.

Side events held on 16 June 2012 included: The UN System Perspectives on Green Economy, organized by the Environment Management Group (EMG), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA); Regreening for Resilient Landscapes: Pastoralists and farmers stewarding ecosystems and economic returns in drylands, organized by World Vision International, International Partners for Sustainable Agriculture/ Citizens Network for Sustainable Development, Savory Institute, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF); Feeding the World: Sustainable agriculture and innovation, organized by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI); Forests, Livelihoods and Green Economy, organized by Environmental Quality Protection Foundation (EQPF), Red Cross Society Taiwan and the National Taiwan University; Sustainable Development in the Face of Rapid Climate Change: High Alpine and polar communities, organized by the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), UNEP, the Stockholm Environment Institute-York, the Government of Sweden and the Mountain Institute; Sustainable Transport Contribution to Rio+20 and its Implementation, organized by the Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport; and National Learning and Skills Strategies to Advance a Green Transition, organized by the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the Secretariat of the UN Secretary General’s High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP) and UN CC:Learn Partners.
