Speaking at the event, UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Executive Secretary Monique Barbut highlighted three land-based indicators that provide an entry point for building greater inter-linkages among the Conventions: land productivity dynamics; land cover change; and trends in carbon stocks. She noted that adopting these shared strategic goals could increase efficiency and avoid duplication in national implementation and reporting processes.

Panelists and participants at the side event, titled ‘Building a common indicator on land-based adaptation for reporting on the Rio Conventions,’ debated how such a coherent approach can be realized at different levels of the international sustainable development agenda. They further noted that to respond to the rapidly growing risks associated with land degradation, land-based approaches to climate change mitigation, adaptation and ecosystem resilience need to be given greater priority within a comprehensive 2015 climate strategy.

The event was co-convened by Costa Rica, France, Morocco, Myanmar, Namibia, Panama and Senegal. [IISD RS ENBOTS Coverage] [IISD RS Coverage of Lima Climate Change Conference] [Event Flyer] [UNCCD Press Release] [IISD RS Guest Article on Land as Missing Link]
