Regional Commissions Discuss Aspirations for Post-2015 Goals

The five UN Regional Commissions reaffirmed their commitment to support UN Member States through the post-2015 development process, in a meeting of top officials in Santiago, Chile.

Participants discussed activities during 2014 that would contribute to defining the post-2015 development agenda, and exchanged their regional aspirations for the next set of goals.

Participants discussed activities during 2014 that would contribute to defining the post-2015 development agenda, and exchanged their regional aspirations for the next set of goals.

The five commissions met on 18-19 March 2014, at the headquarters of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), with participation from ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena, UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Executive Secretary Sven Alkalaj, UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Executive Secretary Shamshad Akhtar, UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf, and the UN Economic Commission for Africa’s (ECA) Special Advisor for Post 2015 Development Agenda, Aida Opoku-Mensah.

The officials also held a dialogue with with the High-Level Committee on Programmes (HLCP), which held its 27th session. Currently chaired by UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Achim Steiner, the HLCP is the arm of the UN Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), charged with promoting system-wide cooperation, coordination and knowledge sharing in programme and operational areas. The UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Post-2015 Development Planning, Amina J. Mohammed, and Interregional Policy Cooperation, Juan Somavía, also participated. [ECLAC Press Release]
