Project on Forests and Climate Change Launched in the Kyrgyz Republic

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have commenced a project titled "Sustainable management of mountain forests and land resources of the Kyrgyz Republic under climate change conditions."

26 March 2013: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) have commenced a project titled “Sustainable management of mountain forests and land resources of the Kyrgyz Republic under climate change conditions.”

A project preparation meeting to discuss practices for the sustainable management of mountainous forests and early implementation was held with stakeholders from the Mountain Partnership in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz Republic, on 18 March 2013. The project’s focal components include: strengthening the enabling environment for sustainable forest and land management; enhancing forest carbon stocks; and promoting climate-friendly agriculture.

This workshop was complemented by another meeting of the Mountain Partnership members in the Kyrgyz Republic, held at Central Asia University, to address how partners can support sustainable mountain development in the country. [Mountain Partnership Press Release] [GEF Project Description]
