19 January 2010: The Permanent Mission of Bolivia to the UN sponsored a press conference on the People’s World Conference on Climate Change and Mother Earth Rights, on 19 January 2010, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. Pablo Solón-Romero, Deputy Permanent Representative of Bolivia, stressed the need to build consensus beyond the Copenhagen Accord, underlining that it is limited to a few countries. He explained that the People’s World Conference, scheduled to take place in Cochabamba, Bolivia, from 20-22 April 2010, would provide a platform for issues already on the table in Copenhagen to be joined by other topics raised by civil society, including the structural causes of climate change. He added that the Copenhagen Accord is not an official outcome of the December Conference and that structural changes in global consumption patterns are necessary to effectively address climate change. Solón-Romero also clarified that the People’s World Conference on Climate Change would not be an official part of the UNFCCC negotiations planned for Mexico City at the end of 2010, but would be part of an effort to build a consensus on the issue from the ground up.
