Preparations Underway for SAICM OEWG Meeting

The OEWG considers the implementation, development and enhancement of SAICM, which is a policy framework that promotes chemical safety around the world.

The April 2019 event will include a series meetings, including regional meetings, a meeting of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) Bureau, and a technical briefing to OEWG3 meeting participants.

January 2019: The Secretariat of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) has announced that registration is open for the third meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG3) for SAICM, which will take place on 2-4 April 2019, in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The OEWG was established as a subsidiary body by a resolution of the first International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM), in 2006. This body considers the implementation, development and enhancement of SAICM, which is a policy framework that promotes chemical safety around the world. SAICM was developed by a multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral Preparatory Committee and supports the achievement of the 2020 goal that was adopted by the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development.

The April 2019 event will include a series meetings, including regional meetings, a meeting of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) Bureau, and a technical briefing to OEWG3 meeting participants.

According to the provisional agenda, the meeting will discuss, inter alia, and independent evaluation of the Strategic Approach for the period 2006–2015 and considerations for the sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020, preparation of recommendations for the fifth session of the ICCM, and progress towards the achievement of the 2020 overall objective of the sound management of chemicals.
